Representing Law Enforcement Personnel

Stewart Powell represents law enforcement officers in administrative and criminal proceedings. He is a member of the Los Angeles Police Protective League (“LAPPL”) legal panel which provides legal representation to its members of the Los Angeles Police Department. He is also an approved attorney for the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (“ALADS”). Stewart represents clients from other law enforcement agencies as well.

The Firm’s services to law enforcement officers includes representation of accused and witness officers in administrative interviews, Skelly responses to administrative findings, and Board of Rights hearings. We represent officers in response to internally generated complaints which include workplace disputes, hostile work environment, retaliation, and sexual harassment, among other issues. We are also experienced in representing officers on public complaints including discourtesy, neglect of duty, biased policing, unlawful detention and arrest, unlawful search and seizure, use of force, and various violations of criminal law. Stewart also represents officers at crime scenes during use-of-force investigations.

Stewart has represented numerous law enforcement officers investigated for, or charged with, criminal offenses, including: sexual assault, grand theft related to overtime hours, forgery, brandishing a firearm, domestic violence, assault under color of authority; and driving under the influence.

Stewart relies on his experience as a former prosecutor and familiarity with law enforcement practices and culture to provide a strong and appropriate defense to each unique situation. We are mindful that many adverse findings at Board of Rights hearings and criminal convictions could have major life ramifications for our clients, such as losing their jobs. We aggressively defend against pending allegations and charges and make every effort to avoid drastic collateral consequences.
